Inheritance

Inheritance. We have all wished, at one point or another, that we would get that letter in the mail, or that phone call, that some extremely rich relative that we never knew we had passed away and left us an inheritance of millions of dollars and we were set for life. It’s the thing movies are made about but never really come true. There’s no rich uncle, no millions of dollars and no inheritance. Just dreams.

We may have an inheritance of some sort left to us by our parents but probably not worth millions. We may even be working towards leaving an inheritance for our children when we are gone. But if we know Christ, our inheritance is already set and just waiting for us in the future.

That’s what’s unique about inheritances, someone usually has to die for it to take place, unless you are as bold as the prodigal son and demand it while your parents are still alive. In the case of Christians, someone did die for our inheritance to be put in place: Jesus Christ. We have not received the full reward of our inheritance yet, but we have received the guarantee of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s down payment of our future inheritance.

The Apostle Peter put it this way - “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you” - 1 Peter 1:3-4.

The Apostle Paul said this about our guarantee - “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” - 2 Corinthians 1:21-22.

Our inheritance is waiting for us in the future. It is imperishable. It is undefiled. And it is unfading. Awaiting us in heaven. Right now we have the gift of the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of that future inheritance.

Have a great day and God bless.
