Heart. That was the request of the Tin Man to the Great and Powerful Oz. All he wanted was a heart to fill that empty barrel chest of his. It wasn’t too much to ask for, was it? He just wanted a heart so that he could feel love and care for others, but be careful what you wish for!
The Bible makes it clear that man’s heart is wicked and evil right from the very beginning. We saw it in Noah’s day: “The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his HEART was only evil continually.” - Genesis 6:5. And it was no different during the days of Jeremiah: “The HEART is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” - Jeremiah 17:9.
But when we come to Christ in a humble manner and confess our need for a Savior and repent of our sins, He gives us a new heart and we can echo the words of David: “Create in me a clean HEART, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” - Psalm 51:10. The heart can be both wicked and it can be a joy to God. It starts out completely wicked until we give our hearts to God.
As I watched the Tin Man get his heart, I imagine it to be like the new heart that God gives us when we accept the free gift of eternal life through His Son. He takes from us the old wicked heart and places within us a new heart, full of love for Him and other people. Have you had a heart transplant? Or are you still holding on to that old wicked heart from your birth? God wants to give you a new heart, a heart that longs for Him.
Have a great day and God bless.
