Labor Day

Labor Day. As Americans celebrate the unofficial end of summer today, there are some people that still had to work today as the rest of us had the day off. Certain professions never get a holiday, some employees may get the day off, but not because of the holiday. I think about our military, our police officers, firefighters, first responders and doctors and nurses, just to name a few.

As I enjoyed the day off from work, it didn’t mean I completely had the day off from working. I finished off some work in the yard that I didn’t get completed on Saturday and I washed my wife’s car for her. I don’t think we ever really have a time where there isn’t some work we can be doing. Whether it’s in the yard or in the house, work can always be found to do. The Bible instructs is not to be idle, “Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.” - Proverbs 19:15.

The Bible also instructs us about our work and our labor, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” - Colossians 3:23-24.

And “For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” - 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12.

God created the first man and woman to work in the Garden of Eden. That work got harder when they sinned and got kicked out of paradise. We labor for the things that we have so that at the end of the day we can say that we received what we worked for.

“And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.””- Luke 10:2. If we don’t have work to do for an employer, we always have work to do for the Lord. The harvest is ready, are we ready to work?

Have a great day and God bless.
