Superheroes

Superheroes. My son loves superheroes. He will pretend he’s a different one about every hour. Between Spider-Man, the Hulk and any others he can think of, he has their powers to shoot webs or smash stuff. I’ve never really been into the whole superhero thing. I think the only superhero movie I have ever seen is the original Batman with Michael Keaton. There seems to be a new superhero movie that comes out every month and I just can’t keep up.

What is it with our fascination with superheroes?  Is it the unique powers that they possess or is it the fact fact that we all have a longing to be saved from evil villains?  I think it’s a bit of both. Who hasn’t dreamt of having some unique superpower as a child?  Being able to fly, leap tall buildings in a single bound or be bulletproof?  It’s what childhood memories are made of.

When it come right down to it though, I think it is that desire to be saved from the evil in this world and have a feeling of safety in our lives. Superheroes deliver both of those in the movies but they don’t exist in real life. But God’s Word tells us of the greatest “superhero” to ever live. He had extraordinary powers but didn’t flaunt them. He knew all things yet kept many of them to Himself. He could escape death but decided not to for our sake. His name is Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” - Philippians 2:5-11.

The greatest superhero story ever told is found in the Word of God!  He died so that you could be saved and spend eternity in safety like we long to have. Do you know Him?  Have you heard of Him?  He knows you and wants a relationship with you.

Have a great day and God bless.
