Growth. Every time that someone I haven’t seen in a while sees my kids, the first thing that usually comes out of their mouths is, “man, look how much they have grown!” The same response happens if I send someone pictures of the kids. I’m not sure if they expect them to stay the same size for years on end, or if that is just a common response when they’ve seen them for the first time in quite a while. Little ones grow so quickly from month to month, but they slow down some as they get older.
As adults, most of our growing is done outward, as we gain weight, our hair grows grey or maybe even goes away, our eyes grow dim and our memories grow distant. Age takes a toll on our growing. But what about growing spiritually? As we age, that is one thing in our lives that should continue to grow stronger and not grow weaker. “The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.” - Psalm 92:12. There is no reason, other than our own slack in doing so, for us to not continue to grow in our walk with Christ as we age.
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” - Ephesians 4:15-16. Our Christian lives should continue to grow in Christlikeness. If we aren’t growing, we’re dying spiritually.
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation-if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” - 1 Peter 2:2-3. As we grow, our desire for the deeper things of God should grow as well. We should be moving from the simple things of God (milk) and into the deeper things of God (meat).
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” - 2 Peter 3:18.
Have a great day and God bless.
