Followers

Followers. It amazes me how many people from around the world follow Between Two Trees that I started about ten months ago. It seems to have spread like wildfire over the last couple of weeks. It is humbling to know that people are reading about events that are happening in your own life and can relate to those moments no matter where they live. But this blog is definitely not about the amount of followers, but more importantly, about who we are following: Jesus Christ.

I’ve heard it said so many times, “don’t be a follower, be a leader!”  I have a problem with that statement on a couple of levels. First, in order to be an effective leader, we have had to be a follower at some point in time. Following brings experience. We learn from others what works well and what doesn’t work at all. Second, if we all become leaders, who will we have following us?  In reality, we are both followers and leaders at the same time. We follow those that are more experienced than we are and we lead those that are less experienced than we are.

Jesus told his disciples, “Follow me.”  The Apostle Paul told others to, “follow me as I follow Christ”. We have to be very careful in who we follow to make sure that we are not lead astray. We also have to make sure those that follow us are of the same accord so that they do not cause division.

Who are you following?  Is it the wisdom of man or the wisdom of God?

Have a great day and God bless.
